Cultural events let people cross social and economic barriers. Everyone is welcome to scream for beads at a Mardi Gras parades, to dance at Live After Five. But cultural events also reveal how we are different.
Rummaging around the CityStats survey data shows that. The biggest group attending Mardi Gras parades, for instance, are 18- to 29-year-olds. Baton Rouge Blues Festival draws Democrats. Tailgating's largest demographic is households earning more than $100,000, while households making $50,000 to $99,000 pick Live After Five in downtown.
Overall, though, Baton Rouge loves college sports and tailgating and Mardi Gras parades, which have grown in recent years. 54% said they attended a college sport or tailgating event in 2015 and 49% said they showed up for Mardi Gras festivities. On the other end is Fest For All, attended by just 15% of the population, though a 15% increase over the year before.
