Library circulation reaches record

Baton Rouge, you love your libraries.

In 2015, voters renewed a library tax and they rate the library as the top government agency. The main branch on Goodwood Boulevard is drawing  more residents.  They use computers, meet in free rooms, study together, relax on the rooftop terrace - all within BREC's Independence Park. The next big project for the system is a downtown branch to replace the existing one should open within two years. You can see the renderings below.

Total circulation - books and other media checked out, downloads of music, books and magazines - hit another record in 2015, rising 8% to 2.76 million.

Total Library Circulation

Includes books, e-books, magazines, e-magazines, and all music and videos.

Downloads soared again, but the rate has slowed considerably since 2013. Research has shown that a majority prefer paper to e-books for longer reads, such as novels.

Digital Downloads

Digital downloads include books, music and magazines.

The next big project for the system is a downtown branch to replace the existing one should open within two years. The $19-million library will be on the Town Square, replacing the branch that is already there.

The downtown LIBRARY will be located on the TOWN SQUARE. Construction on the $19 million BRANCH BEGINS IN OCtober 2016.
